Annual Medical Camps

At least once a year, a Kenya Aid team travels to Shikunga. During this time the Australian doctors and the clinic staff hold medical camps in Shikunga and the surrounding villages. These medical camps are run with the sanction of the Kenyan Ministry of health.

Apart from the obvious health benefits of such camps, they provide an invaluable opportunity for on the job staff training, with the clinic staff being able to interact directly with the visiting doctors learning both clinical and procedural skills.

The camps also provide a unique opportunity to collect valuable data on health statistics. Kenya Aid then uses this data to source areas of need, to improve the management of prevalent conditions, to more effectively allocate funds, and to improve awareness back in Australia.

The camps are also important in creating partnerships with local hospitals. Some of these provide nursing students as translators for the Australian doctors, allowing the students an invaluable teaching opportunity.
